Annecy (France) bids for 2018 Winter Olympics

Three cities — two from Europe and one from Asia — have applied to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, the smallest bidding field in three decades.

The German city of Munich, the French lakeside town of Annecy and the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang submitted their preliminary bids to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The full IOC will select the 2018 host city at its session in Durban, South Africa, on July 6, 2011.

Munich, which held the 1972 Summer Olympics, aims to become the first city to host both the summer and winter games. The Bavarian city proposes holding snow and ice events in the mountain resorts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Koenigssee.

Pyeongchang, located in the mountains 110 miles east of Seoul, is bidding for the third straight time after narrowly losing out for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Savoy resort of Annecy is making its first Olympic bid, although France has staged the Winter Games three times — Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968 and Albertville 1992.

The 2014 Winter Games will be held in Sochi, the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada., Russia

On the 6th of July 2011 at the IOC session in Durban, South Africa the final vote will be made.

Annecy is the perfect place to stage 2018 Winter Games. As an American I had the pleasure of attending language school there. The city is efficiently run and you can not have better venue sites anywhere on earth

Annecy is charming and the area round it is accessible by a good system of motorways, fast trains and air links. The northern alps have a good snow record and are used to hosting big events like the Tour du France. The other venues of Avoriaz, Morzine & Chamonix are well established, have excellent facilities and are set in spectacular scenery. It would be a great choice for the 2018 Winter Olympics
